Halloween gives you the opportunity to celebrate with family during one of the spookiest times of the year. Some people even bring their pets along to celebrate Halloween too. Why not include your horses? Here are five ways that you can also bring your horse to the festivities.
One of Halloween’s most familiar events is to go trick-or-treating, but you can’t go trick-or-treating without dressing up, of course. Why not also dress up your dog or horse…or both? Depending on if you create your own or buy a costume for your horse, you must make sure that it is safe and can be removed quickly just in case your horse feels a different type of spooky spirit!
You may want to introduce the costume to your horse prior to the day’s event to ensure that your horse is motivated to wear the costume.
And, having themes for both you and your horse will really bring out the spooky spirit!
What horse wouldn’t enjoy some succulent and delicious treats that will not only get them in the festive spirit but will also make them love you even more? Apples are a popular seasonal and safe treat for your horse, and they’ll be sure to bite down hard for all the fruity juice. Another treat that you may want to consider are slices of pumpkin, which they may surprisingly devour.
While you should not feed your horse chocolate or any type of chew candy. If you want to share your sweet tooth with your horse, buy some peppermints to give your horse a Halloween treat!
We don’t really know what horses think about our crazy desire to celebrate Halloween with your horse, but making your barn spooky will not only get you in the spirit but may even get your horse in the mood too. Using items like corn stalks, hay bales, webbing and pumpkins can be inexpensive ways to make Halloween spirit come alive. You could also decorate with other scary decor items, just making sure they are placed away from your horse’s temptation to eat them.
Halloween’s parades have become a largely celebrated and participated event on the 31st of October. If your horse is well-trained and does not get spooked easily, you may want to consider joining and participating in it. You can either gather some friends and make a parade with their horses around your property or join a public parade to make everyone’s Halloween even livelier.
Depending on where you are, trick-or-treating is the most common activity to do on Halloween. If your horse is steady and well-trained, you could definitely take your horse tick-or-treating. As always, you may want to take some extra precautions to ensure that your horse and yourself are well-lit and stay close to home to keep your horse as comfortable as possible. This will not only allow you to have a pleasant and spooky evening but will also impress and inspire locals.
Alternatively, invite everyone to the barn, have a party, and hold a trick-or-treating “horse style” around the barn. This might be a safer and more familiar environment for you to celebrate Halloween with your horse, and maybe even more fun for you!
Most important…celebrate and have fun!
